Explorin' the Big Easy
Rat-holes, Hotel Gems, BEADS, BEADS & MORE BEADS
Stopped by New Orleans on 16 Mar 05 and went straight to Voo Doo BBQ on St Charles Street. As always!!! Great pulled pork and jerk chicken--DO NOT FORGET THE CORN PUDDING--if you're into that! Also stumbled across a Heavenly Hash chocolate-covered marshmallow egg with almonds! Mmmm...mmmm!!!
the most abyssmally awful hotel--EVER!!! This even comes from somebody who doesn't mind camping, bugs and creepy critters!!!
NEVER, EVER, EVER stay at the Grand Palace on Canal St!!!!!!!!!!!!! 'Nuf said!!! IT WAS ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS!!!! If turning down the sheets to a newly checked in hotel room and finding some person's lunch from previous days, cigarette ashes in the sink, trash in the trash can, unvacuumed floors and other people's forgotten personal items is your cup of tea, then you'll enjoy it here. Otherwise, run, run, run to the Health Dept and complain about this rathole!!! As if our experience in the hotel wasn't bad enough, upon leaving the hotel I found creepy crawlies in my brand new backpack. We don't have these particular creepy crawlies in our part of the country because it's too cold for them to survive--the only place they could have jumped aboard with this unfortunate night in the abyss.
On a More Positive Night's Note!!!
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS stay at the Le Cirque on Lee Circle!!! Upscale, trendy, modern Japanese Zen inspired for around $65/night. If my own home could resemble a hotel room, this would be my inspiration!!! Great value for an awesome place--even with a major renovation going on during our visit!!! A++++ for hotels in New Orleans!!! We enjoyed it more than our several day stay at the $250/night Fairmont over near Canal St.
As for our letterboxing exploits in town--haven't gotten out to look for any yet and our trip is almost over. We did check on our own boxes to see how they fared these past 10 months. Doing well despite Hurricane Ivan's impact. ;) We managed to find time to plant a letterbox and we also squeezed in some geoca$hing adventures, too! Don't miss the View Carre' geocache if you only have limited time in the Big Easy--it's an unforgettable experience!
We enjoyed St Patrick's Day and Italian American/St Joseph's Celebrations during our stay. New Orleans has never failed to provide us a parade complete with tossed beads every single time we've visited--regardless what time of year it is! Wonder if the Chamber of Commerce owns stock in plastic bead necklaces? ;)
Great restaurants: Mama Rosa's Pizza at 616 N Rampart. The decor isn't much but the pizza was awesome! Beignets & Cafe au Lait at Cafe du Monde. Red, Beans & Rice at ... on Burgundy?
