Mis-adventures of a Letterboxer-Errant

Silk Factory

Silk worm cocoons

We stopped by the silk factory store on our way back from the Great Wall trek. We first learned about silk worms and how they actually process the cocoons for the silk. I'll walk you through some of the process with photos we took during our visit. First, we learned about the silkworm life cycle. What perfect timing for rnrB who just recently studied caterpillars and butterflies in school!

So, once the silkworm larvae create their cocoons--they are sorted by 'single or double' worm cocoons. Apparently this distinction determines if the cocoons' silk goes toward silk thread or toward comforters (I'll explain this a bit more in a future photo).
