Bats in the Belfry?
Bosingak, Seoul's Belfry
This was another goal of ours this day--to locate Seoul's Belfry in town. Back when Seoul was a totally 'walled' city, residents were required to pass through one of four gates to go in and out of the city. At night they would close these gates for protection from their enemies. They used the belfry's bell to signal when they were opening and closing the gates. It was quite a beautiful building! It's so amazing to see all of this antiquated cultural history embedded in the middle of a modern 'skyscraper-laden' city such as Seoul. It's nice to see they were able to preserve so much of their vital history before the newer buildings popped up.
