Burghers de Calais...
Burghers of Calais
Today, was one of those 'Seattle' days--overcast with the very real threat of rain looming in the air. So, we opted for a 'museum' day after our morning studies. We walked past Seoul Station and Namdaemun over toward City Hall and eventually found this gorgeous glass & steel building that houses the Rodin collection here in Seoul--in the Samsung Life building. It contains two commissioned works of Rodin--the Burghers of Calais and The Gates of Hell and then a visiting collection of work by a contemporary Korean artist residing in the US.
I studied this piece in high school in Germany during an incredible 'humanities' class that was required for graduation. I took the class begrudgingly and soon grew to love it--despite a hot-cold relationship with the instructors. It was one of those pieces I wanted to see in person--again. This particular piece was the 12th and final casting of Rodin's masterpiece.
