Mis-adventures of a Letterboxer-Errant

Silk cocoon stretch

The double silkworm cocoons are soaked, the larvae removed and then they're stretched as far as they can go. These 'silk webs' are then layered upon other webs until they weigh a certain amount. The number of layers determines what 'season' of a silk comforter they will make--warm weather, cold weather or both season. They're also stretched to make the various sizes of bed linens--twin/full/queen/king. Once they have the number of layers they desire with the amount of weight, then they bind them in a simple cotton gauze covering. Then, these are usually inserted into fancy duvets (comforter covers). Having lived in Europe quite a while as a kid, I was quite used to down comforters but this factory visit opened my eyes to silk comforters. So, I purchased a couple. Of course, this being a silk factory and all--the comforters weren't terribly expensive. The duvets, on the other hand, were gorgeous and QUITE expensive. I've got duvets at home so I was plenty content with simply coming home with the silk 'comforter' bit. ;)
