Mis-adventures of a Letterboxer-Errant

To North Korea and back in 1 day!

So, I actually made it to North Korea today. Ventured into it all of 8 feet or so for about 15 minutes. Wow! I snapped as many photos as physically possible but in many instances was prevented, for obvious security reasons, from taking photos at various sites.

I took the DMZ Tour of the Joint Security Area and Infiltration Tunnel #3. For history buffs, you can learn more information about why the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) even exists here. It may help explain in much more detail and simplicity than I ever could about the various intricacies involved in the heaviest fortified border between two countries (once a tight homogenous people) in the modern world. All I can say is, to this individual who has studied the Korean situation for going on almost a decade now, this experience was an eye-opener. Life changing in a way! I'll attempt to take you on a tour of what I experienced through sequential photos. Enjoy your tour to a place where many folks aren't even allowed to venture.

We start our tour at Checkpoint #1. From this point, our identification is verified. Then we proceed across Freedom Bridge along Freedom Highway to Camp Bonifas of the Joint Security Area. We're quite cognizant of the dangerous venture we're undertaking. Photography is prohibited and we're surrounded on both sides by tall, metal fences, large street lights and razor sharp concertina wire. This is not your ordinary tour!!!
