Mis-adventures of a Letterboxer-Errant

Mystical Places

Happy Mounds & Chejudo Homes

We visited Mok Sok Won--this incredible collection of traditional Cheju Island homes, sculptures, uniquely shaped boulders and tree roots native to the island. This place was MAGICAL! Very difficult to describe without pictures.

The traditional homes of Cheju appear to be wooden huts with straw thatched roofs. The unique thing is that the thatched roofs are drapped by a woven reed mesh that is tied down to the supporting eaves. Some of these mesh coverings are edged with rocks to secure them during the strong winds that are common to this island.

We walked past Stone Grandfather (Dolhaerung) gardens, old grinding stones, burial mounds and ancient tree roots that have weathered into these gorgeous pieces of natural art. In parts of this display, they had even written a story using these unique natural specimens.
