Mis-adventures of a Letterboxer-Errant

Real Body detour

Well, after our barefoot park 'torture' session we wandered through the park and stumbled upon the 'Real Body' exhibit. Something we seem to have been following all around the world. Back in 97, we noticed that it was touring through Germany while we visited--but the lines went around Heidelberg so we never ventured inside. Then, it toured several different towns in the US--but we never seemed to be at the right one, with enough time, to take in the tour. Well, lo & behold, we find ourselves in Seoul WHILE the exhibit is visiting WITH some time to spare (ok--so our quest for the geocache gets delayed by an hour or two...). So, we prep rnrB & trkr for what they're about to see not sure how such an exhibit will affect little children--

Body Worlds: The Anatomical Exhibition of Real Bodies

As I'm fascinated with most things anatomical &/or medical, this exhibit is right up my alley. For anybody who is the least bit squeamish, I recommend you bypass this. It was rather weird--viewing real 'once living' bodies dedicated to science knowing that these 'shells' used to contain souls of living, breathing people--many with hopes and dreams very similar to our own. It was quite fascinating--from a scientific/anatomical perspective but a little eery (perhaps gruesome?) at the same time. This was truly an 'adventure' we hadn't planned on experiencing this day!

PHYSICAL IMPACT

I found myself quite in awe of the intricacies of the human body--what an incredible organism the human body is! G*d created such a fascinating machine--complete with so many unique and beautiful mechanisms!!! We were engrossed in the muscular structure, then the skeletal design, the tendons & ligaments, the arteries & veins, each individual organ--it was a very powerful exhibit! Exploring this exhibit was something akin to dissection exercises in biology class but without the mess & the unforgettable odours. This display seemed to capture the 'essential' parts of anatomy class without all the unpleasantness that typically accompanies such an exercise. Truly an unforgettable experience! I only wish that we were already on the human body section of our homeschool studies for rnrB & trkr (we study anatomy in our next science block)--as that would have proven to be a very powerful reinforcement of their school lessons!!!

SPIRITUAL IMPACT

On a spiritual realm, this exhibit seems to tug at your soul. Knowing these 'bodies' or 'shells' for souls once contained a real, living, breathing person is rather 'intense'. This point really drives home to our hearts as the various bodies are displayed in very 'physical' ways--poses that 'make sense to us'--one is posed as a runner, another as a rugby player, a football/soccer player, a tennis player--very real poses, orientations that fantastically reveal the dynamics of the various muscle structures. However, despite the enormity of the physical nature of it all--this exhibit truly seems to drive home the underlying message that our 'bodies' are merely temporary vessels and that there must be something much more to life than just our temporary time on Earth. Wonder what the 'souls' of these bodies on display are thinking about our fascination with their 'plasticized' bodies? In an intense way, this exhibit is unquestionably life changing!
