Mis-adventures of a Letterboxer-Errant

"A letterboxer errant without trail entanglements would be
like a tree without leaves or fruit, or a body without a soul"

Tree Memorial

"The Axe Murders" Tree Memorial in Panmunjeom

This monument memorializes a very tragic incident that occured here on 18 August 1976. Sad, sad event. Indeed.

I'll let you look into the incident yourself. I forewarn you that it may be unnerving for squeamish types. On a personal note, one of my language instructors in the military over the years actually has a wedge of wood from the tree involved in this incident. Little did I know that this very quiet and humble man had served in this zone during this incident. I only learned this fact when I actually saw the 12"x8"x6" wedge of poplar wood with a plaque mounted upon it memorializing the two US officers who were killed during the attack. I am honored to have known this 'gentle giant' who served our country during such a frightening incident of our nation's & South Korea's national history. Yet, another reminder that freedom isn't free!
